The club has had several
names since it's inception in 1979. They are: Charlotte Frisbee Club Cooperative,
Charlotte Frisbee Club and Charlotte Disc Golf League.
The
"Charlotte Frisbee Cooperative" was originally founded in the late 70's
by a University of North Carolina at Charlotte student. "Frisbee
Golf" was played on campus using light poles as targets and even a corner
of a building. In the early 80's, a course was developed in Latta Park in
the Dilworth neighborhood near uptown Charlotte. The targets started out as marked
trees, moved to hand-crafted cedar posts and eventually baskets were installed
in the late 80's.
Chief
Course Architect and Director, Stan McDaniel....Mule #1
Thanks in a large
part to tireless efforts of local Hall
of Famer, Stan McDaniel, Charlotte has become a true mecca for disc golf.
In particular, his course designs at Hornet's Nest
and Renaissance define the local scene. The
blood, sweat, and tears shed at Renny to make it possibly the most challenging
course in the world (while fair and fun), have earned Stan the title, Mule
#1.
In 1986, the PDGA's
World Championships came to town, organized by Steve Lambert. Temporary basket
courses were setup at Reedy Creek, Hornets
Nest and Latta Park for this event. A decade later, the World's returned
in 1997 at the permanent Hornets Nest course and Winthrop
University's Lakefront Gold Course in neighboring Rock Hill, SC.
A
web presence was created in July, 1997 to promote the World's event and to celebrate
the completion of course improvements throughout the city.
Since then Charlotte has been an active disc golf city with many regularly scheduled events that have been well attended and enjoyed by thousands.
