‘Renny’ is actually 2 courses in one and now combines a few original fairways to obtain a shorter layout for faster speed of play. Utilizing original hole 7, short pin on 8, original holes 11 & 12 and a short pin on 14, players skip the three large field holes on the back of the property. This new layout is known as “Grey” as a reference to the original “Black” layout.
Renaissance Park is world renown and people travel to play this course. It is, by far, the most challenging course in the area. It’s a monster of a course, with a bit of everything thrown in. Uphill, downhill, wide open, tight mandos, ravines, heavily wooded, long and even a short one or two.
Lots of effort has been spent both on the course and on this web site to help explain how best to navigate your way around on your first visits. Please take full advantage of these resources…..better yet, contact someone in Charlotte to be your tour guide!
A little history of Renny from Stan: In Dec. of 97′ I made contact with MCPR about beginning the process of getting a course in at Renny. Over the next 4 months I was lobbying for permission and also took care of the paperwork to get matching funds from the park dept for baskets thorugh a matching grant program they had at that time. In March of 98 at a MCPR meeting on Hwy 16 it was official that MCPR would give us match of $3 for every 1$ that we contributed. The club put in $1500 and we got $4500 from MCPR which would be enough to order 18 baskets. It would take some time, a few hundreds of hours of labor from me and the same from Sam (and some lesser amounts of labor from others also)before Sam and I went to pick the baskets up on Dec.18th 1998 and we also installed the first two sleeves on holes 1 and 18 that day. On Dec the 19th the next 7 sleeves were installed by myself, Alan Beaver, Scott Radley and Chris Lingle on holes 2-8. On Dec. the 22nd 1998 Sam Nicholson and Alan Beaver and myself assembled 9 baskets at SAm’s house. Alan and I put them together while Sam was welding the locking collars onto the poles for theft prevention. The following day, Dec the 23rd 1998 Sam brought the baskets to Renny but could not stay. Chris Lingle and I installed the first 9 baskets. It was 31 degrees out and drizzling and everything was covered with a coat of ice by the time we got the baskets in. When we got them all installed we played the first round at Renny. Chris beat me with a 32 to my 33. We did not get any birdies, but I still remember how awesome it was to be playing with ice all over everything. You could walk through wild rose bushes and not get poked since the tips of the thorns were covered with ice.
